The Number: One Man’s Search for Identity in the Cape Underworld and Prison Gangs is a non-fiction book by Jonny Steinberg that documents the life of Magadien Wentzel, a career criminal and member of the infamous 28s prison gang in South Africa. The book is based on over 50 hours of interviews Steinberg conducted with Wentzel while he was still in Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town.
